Description

Sergeant Gilbert Brain was 27 years of age when he landed on D-Day with the 2nd Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. Within days he was in action against one of Hitler’s elite divisions and winning the Military Medal. This was the start of eleven months’ hard campaigning, which took him and his battalion from the shores of Normandy to the North German Plain. His remarkable memoir is a frontline soldier’s eyewitness account of the Allied armies’ liberation of North West Europe.

Gilbert’s memoir has been edited, with additional commentary, maps and photographs, by his nephew Dr Timothy Brain, OBE, QPM, former chief constable of Gloucestershire.
